Autocatalysis

Autocatalysis, is a fascinating chemical phenomenon where a reaction is accelerated by one of its own products. In simpler terms, the more product a reaction creates, the faster the reaction goes!

Self-Boosting Reaction

A typical chemical reaction involves reactants (starting ingredients) and products (what’s formed). In autocatalysis, one of the products acts as a catalyst, speeding up the reaction that creates it. This creates a positive feedback loop:

  1. Reactants come together and form products (including the catalyst).
  2. The catalyst increases the rate at which the reactants form products (including more catalyst).
  3. With more catalyst present, the reaction speeds up even further.

An example would be the nuclear fission that occur in a nuclear bomb.

Autocatalysis as a Metaphor

There are plenty of phenomena outside of science where reactions create bigger, more explosive reactions. This can be both positive and negative.

The study of autocatalysis helps us understand complex chemical reactions and develop new technologies. For instance, scientists are exploring the use of autocatalytic reactions in self-replicating materials and drug delivery systems. Autocatalysis can also be observed in non-chemical contexts.—
