Inversion is a mental model where mistakes are avoided and goals are achieved by considering the opposite of what is desired. Inversion is not about finding good advice, but rather about finding anti-advice to identify what to avoid.
Approach problems from a different angle
Inversion helps us think outside our normal thought patterns. The solution to a dilemma often comes easily by putting a spotlight on errors and roadblocks not obvious at first glance. Instead of asking how to do something, ask “how to not do it.” Turn a situation or problem upside down to look at it backwards.
Inversion steps
- Identify a goal or outcome you want to achieve
- Define what failure looks like
- Identify the actions, behaviors, or events that could prevent you from achieving your goal
- Take steps to avoid those actions, behaviors, or events
Inversion is counterintuitive
While not obvious to think about the opposite of what you want, avoiding mistakes is an under-appreciated way to prevent failure and carries little risk. Think forward and backward to occasionally drive your brain in reverse.
“Invert. Always invert.” Difficult problems can become crystal clear through inversion. This mental model should be used often.
